The season is more than 2/3rds finished already! Actually, for some teams there are only three or four games left.
The last two weeks have seen a whole lot of dry, hot soccer – and although there weren’t a lot of big upsets (Hawks beating Thunder 1-0 a notable exception) there continues to be a big drive towards good playoff spots as we get closer and closer.
Looks like an extremely tight 4-way race for top in the league (notice Ancaster has two games in hand). Some big matchups will be Ancaster v Thunder on July 24th and Ancaster v Bulldogs two days later on Thur July 26th! Ancaster plays Dundas on July 31st – clearly although they have two games in hand they have a tough end of the year!
On the other side of the playoff race, it looks like York, Cambridge, and Hawks will fit into 5th-7th — unless they have a few great weeks yet?
A three-way race for the last playoff spot may be in the works. Rockton has turned their season around as could be expected with such a strong team, and is sitting in 8th – but Brant County FC has two games in hand. Maybe the last game of the season (Rockton v BCFC on Aug 2nd) will determine who makes it in? We’ll see! Wentworth FC still has not rediscovered the way to win games, dropping into 10th spot. With games vs. Cambridge, Rockton, and the Hawks left to go, there may be hope yet.
In terms of goal scorers, Jordan Kerkof is still leading the league with 19 – and thanks to the Thunder splitting their shutouts between two goaltenders (11 goals against in 14 games), Dan Aasman from the Assault is now leading with six shutouts.
There have been a few more yellow and red cards compared to the first half of the season. Remember to respect our refs!
